Pride Month: Visibility, Diversity and Solidarity
Every year in June, Pride Month is celebrated around the world. In Germany, it is best known through Christopher Street Day (CSD). Both stand for visibility, equality and the rights of queer people.
Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Riots of 1969 in New York, which are considered a major turning point for the LGBTQIA+ movement. To this day, it stands as a symbol of acceptance, respect and social diversity.
Today, this sense of solidarity is more important than ever. Current figures show that anti-queer crimes in Germany continue to rise: in 2025, an increase of 12.8% was recorded. At the same time, security authorities are observing growing mobilization by far-right groups against the LSBTIAQ* community. Queer people are deliberately being turned into the enemy image of an ideology that rejects diversity, self-determination and equality. This makes it all the more important to remain visible, support one another and stand together in solidarity. Every voice, every participation in a CSD event and every form of allyship sends a message against hatred and exclusion.
Equality in the music industry is still far from being achieved. The female:pressure FACTS Study shows progress in the visibility of women and non-binary artists at electronic music festivals, but the figures also make clear how significant the existing inequalities still are. In 2023, women accounted for 30% of acts worldwide, while non-binary artists represented only 3.3%.
These figures highlight that diverse perspectives remain underrepresented. This makes networks, funding programs and initiatives such as Music Women* Germany all the more important, as they work to promote greater visibility, equal opportunities and participation for women, trans, intersex, non-binary and genderqueer people in the music industry. Diversity does not happen on its own. It requires spaces, resources and people who actively commit themselves to change.
