Women’s Bodies in Pop: Music Women* Germany Featured in Tagesschau
The German news outlet Tagesschau recently published a feature on beauty standards and body pressure in pop music. Whether it’s Nelly Furtado, Adele, or Billie Eilish: women’s bodies are constantly commented on and judged, while the music itself fades into the background. The article asks: Why can’t women just make music?
Our chairwoman Anika Jankowski, who is part of the Music Women Germany* board, explains how intense the pressure can be to conform to certain beauty ideals. So intense that some women decide not to perform on stage and prefer to work behind the scenes. At the same time, she points out that there is movement happening backstage: networks and associations like Music Women* Germany are raising awareness among decision-makers about the harm this pressure causes.
